Solid State Hard Drives

I have always been sort of a computer geek.  I have been toying with computers since I was in my early teens.  So you have to be only slightly surprised when I tell you I'm excited about some new computer technology.  We always seem to hear about the latest and greatest processor speed and bigger memory, but the one thing that hasn't really changed a whole lot, till now, is the hard drive.  They may have got a lot bigger in capacity, but not speed.  Well as it turns out, the same technology we use in digital cameras (you know, the little sd cards – and even micro sd cards).  Well those SD cards are like little hard drives with no moving parts, which is nothing like the computer hard drive which ranges anywhere from 5400rpm to 10,000rpm (maybe higher?).

So, this new technology in hard drives I want to talk to you about, is called Solid State Hard Drives.  Solid State meaning it has absolutely no moving parts at all making it more durable than the standard hard drive.  This means that hard drive failures are far fewer, and since the computer doesn't have to seek out your files (literally), by spinning up the hard drive, the SSD  can retrieve any number of files almost instantly.  Startup times are much quicker to.  Just think how nice it would be shave a few minutes off of that boot up time.  As Commander Data from Star Trek The Next Generation would say, "That is nearly an eternity."

Here is a comparison of what the two hard drives look like:

So the next computer you purchase might just have this solid state hard drive in it.  Right now the price is a little high to be standard, but like all memory products I'm sure the price will go down over time and will become affordable and maybe even the new standard.

For comparison a 250gb traditional hard drive replacement costs about  $80

and

A solid state hardrive 250gb cost nearly $425 (almost 5 times more)

Maybe in a couple years we can all be computing at even greater speed than we are now.  Maybe we will have computers that can simulate the human brain so maybe we won't have to use ours (a lot of us are already not using ours…. seriously)?  LOL

WordPress for android

Well I’m writing this post from my smart phone.  Hard to believe since its only been about a month since I had this thing, and believe me when I say it sure didn’t make me feel smart when I first got it.  Now that I’m used to it, the smartphone turned out to be one of the best purchases of 2011.

So I suppose this means I will be blogging more now that I literally carry my blog with me in my pocket, and now that WordPress has this nifty app I can use, it really simplifies things for me.

Well that’s all for now.  Have a Merry Christmas!

Sarahs Personalized Gifts

Personalized Gifts Are More Meaningful Than Gift Cards!

Thinking of getting someone a gift this year? Are you one of those people who always gives someone chocolate, other food products, gift cards, or even cash as a gift? I'm sure they always like getting them, but don't you think they deserve something more thought provoking than that? I know I'm asking to many questions right? Oops there I asked another one. Sorry…

You see, in today's world people have sort of lost touch with the personal side of things. I just don't see how a gift card can be personal. Not that I don't like them but every time I get one I think, "Gee I guess they didn't want to take the time out of their day to actually pick something out." Giving me a gift card is like telling me in a gently kind of way "here go buy your own gift." I know, I know, its all about convenience right? You go to the store, buy a gift card, and walk out two minutes later thinking the hardest part is over (your thinking "I got the gift…yayyy"). So I guess what I'm suggesting is maybe a personalized gift is in order.

I can name everyone who has ever given me a personalized gift, what it was, when I got it, and what the occasion was. Especially the ones with my name on it. People love to see their name on something (an ego thing I guess). If you want to impress someone special, don't give them another piece of worthless plastic (which is exactly what it is when all the money is gone). Get them something personalized. You don't even have to know what the person likes. If you get them something with their name on it they will treasure it for years to come and will always remember who gave it to them (in most cases anyway).

So I was on Facebook today and my longtime good friend Sarah posted her website on her status update and I was intrigued to find a website where she sells exactly what I have been talking about. Personalized gifts, custom designed, at a very fair price. You should really check them out I thinking about buying some myself. Gift Cards are cool, but getting a personalized gift is much more meaningful.

The Pilots Lounge

It all began a long time ago. I moved to TN back in 1993, and never really made many friends because I always felt more mature than most other people I had to deal with on a daily basis at school. So any friends I did make were pretty much the same way, and thats a good thing. It has allowed me to make REAL friends. Not those fake friends who suddenly go AWOL when you really need them. So even though I don’t have a million friends, the ones I do have are awesome.

With that being said, My good friend Justin has sort of put my life in a script called “The Pilots Lounge”

You should really check it out: Click Here for The Pilots Lounge
