Solid State Hard Drives

I have always been sort of a computer geek.  I have been toying with computers since I was in my early teens.  So you have to be only slightly surprised when I tell you I'm excited about some new computer technology.  We always seem to hear about the latest and greatest processor speed and bigger memory, but the one thing that hasn't really changed a whole lot, till now, is the hard drive.  They may have got a lot bigger in capacity, but not speed.  Well as it turns out, the same technology we use in digital cameras (you know, the little sd cards – and even micro sd cards).  Well those SD cards are like little hard drives with no moving parts, which is nothing like the computer hard drive which ranges anywhere from 5400rpm to 10,000rpm (maybe higher?).

So, this new technology in hard drives I want to talk to you about, is called Solid State Hard Drives.  Solid State meaning it has absolutely no moving parts at all making it more durable than the standard hard drive.  This means that hard drive failures are far fewer, and since the computer doesn't have to seek out your files (literally), by spinning up the hard drive, the SSD  can retrieve any number of files almost instantly.  Startup times are much quicker to.  Just think how nice it would be shave a few minutes off of that boot up time.  As Commander Data from Star Trek The Next Generation would say, "That is nearly an eternity."

Here is a comparison of what the two hard drives look like:

So the next computer you purchase might just have this solid state hard drive in it.  Right now the price is a little high to be standard, but like all memory products I'm sure the price will go down over time and will become affordable and maybe even the new standard.

For comparison a 250gb traditional hard drive replacement costs about  $80

and

A solid state hardrive 250gb cost nearly $425 (almost 5 times more)

Maybe in a couple years we can all be computing at even greater speed than we are now.  Maybe we will have computers that can simulate the human brain so maybe we won't have to use ours (a lot of us are already not using ours…. seriously)?  LOL

WordPress for android

Well I’m writing this post from my smart phone.  Hard to believe since its only been about a month since I had this thing, and believe me when I say it sure didn’t make me feel smart when I first got it.  Now that I’m used to it, the smartphone turned out to be one of the best purchases of 2011.

So I suppose this means I will be blogging more now that I literally carry my blog with me in my pocket, and now that WordPress has this nifty app I can use, it really simplifies things for me.

Well that’s all for now.  Have a Merry Christmas!

Sarahs Personalized Gifts

Personalized Gifts Are More Meaningful Than Gift Cards!

Thinking of getting someone a gift this year? Are you one of those people who always gives someone chocolate, other food products, gift cards, or even cash as a gift? I'm sure they always like getting them, but don't you think they deserve something more thought provoking than that? I know I'm asking to many questions right? Oops there I asked another one. Sorry…

You see, in today's world people have sort of lost touch with the personal side of things. I just don't see how a gift card can be personal. Not that I don't like them but every time I get one I think, "Gee I guess they didn't want to take the time out of their day to actually pick something out." Giving me a gift card is like telling me in a gently kind of way "here go buy your own gift." I know, I know, its all about convenience right? You go to the store, buy a gift card, and walk out two minutes later thinking the hardest part is over (your thinking "I got the gift…yayyy"). So I guess what I'm suggesting is maybe a personalized gift is in order.

I can name everyone who has ever given me a personalized gift, what it was, when I got it, and what the occasion was. Especially the ones with my name on it. People love to see their name on something (an ego thing I guess). If you want to impress someone special, don't give them another piece of worthless plastic (which is exactly what it is when all the money is gone). Get them something personalized. You don't even have to know what the person likes. If you get them something with their name on it they will treasure it for years to come and will always remember who gave it to them (in most cases anyway).

So I was on Facebook today and my longtime good friend Sarah posted her website on her status update and I was intrigued to find a website where she sells exactly what I have been talking about. Personalized gifts, custom designed, at a very fair price. You should really check them out I thinking about buying some myself. Gift Cards are cool, but getting a personalized gift is much more meaningful.

The Pilots Lounge

It all began a long time ago. I moved to TN back in 1993, and never really made many friends because I always felt more mature than most other people I had to deal with on a daily basis at school. So any friends I did make were pretty much the same way, and thats a good thing. It has allowed me to make REAL friends. Not those fake friends who suddenly go AWOL when you really need them. So even though I don’t have a million friends, the ones I do have are awesome.

With that being said, My good friend Justin has sort of put my life in a script called “The Pilots Lounge”

You should really check it out: Click Here for The Pilots Lounge

Discover the Best Campgrounds in America

Well I have been doing a lot of work lately on a new project.  I’m putting together a camping website about RV Campgrounds, Beach Campgrounds, National and State Park Campgrounds, and much more.  I am putting up several articles a week reviewing the top campgrounds in each state.  I still have to add some pictures and links to the individual campgrounds, but that will take some time.

Have a look if your interested.  Its only been up for a couple weeks so there will be plenty of content added over the next few months.

Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga TN

Kristina and I recently went on a small weekend trip to see the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga, TN.  We wanted to see some nice scenery while driving so we opted not to take the Interstate that most people drive on.  Instead we started out on Highway 31 in Columbia, TN and down Highway 50 and ended up taking US Hwy 64 over to US Hwy 41 South to Chattanooga.  The traffic was pretty light most of the time and it was a very relaxing, stress free drive.

Down on Highway 41 along the Tennessee River Gorge, we found a public boat ramp to take a few pictures of the beautiful Tennessee River.  The view was spectacular and it was nice to walk around and breath the fresh air and take in all the scenery while getting a little exercise in (not as much as walking around the Aquarium as I would later find out).

After taking a few photos of the Tennessee River we headed back down Hwy 41 and into Chattanooga.  I was amazed at how clean the Downtown Chattanooga area looked.  You can definitely tell this was a safe place to be walking around.  There are all kinds of restaurants near the Tennessee Aquarium.  Besides their own little cafe, you can choose from a Mexican Restaurant directly in front of the parking lot to the Aquarium, or adjacent to the property on the other side of the ticket/information center there is a TGI Fridays and many other top notch places to eat.  Then if you prefer to relax and sit for awhile, there is a nice movie theater a couple blocks down the main street on the right.  Kristina and I went to see a movie after being on our feet all day at the Aquarium.

The cost to get in to the Aquarium was $25.00 per person plus $9.oo to park.  Paying to park is the way to go since we didn’t have to walk very far.  There are plenty of parking garages and metered parking spaces up and down the streets.   The Tennessee Aquarium offers plenty of things to see from penguins to butterflies and lots more.  Here are a few pictures of what they have.

If you are looking to take your family on a fun little weekend getaway, I would definitely recommend The Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga, TN.

I Am Engaged!

October 26th, 2010 in Palm Beach Shores Florida I took a walk with a beautiful woman out on the beach. The sun was low on the horizon just about to go down behind the trees behind us. I turned around and faced this beautiful woman and asked her to marry me and of course Kristina said yes. To this date that has been the best day of my life. I am so happy and lucky to have a woman like her to be my wife. I will never forget that moment.

The engagement ring I gave to Kristina on the beach.

Where do we go from here?

Have you ever drove by a car accident or dead animal on the side of the road?  You looked didn’t you?  Not because you wanted to, but the fact remains that our curiosity always gets the best of us, which explains why we can’t help rubbernecking (as we call it) when we see stuff out of the ordinary.  So its no surprise then that I have been paying a lot of attention to the disaster in Washington D.C. lately.  No I’m not talking about the BP Oil spill either, but since I mentioned it, just like Katrina, they are doing a horrible job cleaning the mess up.

Ok, back to my discussion.  Obviously President Obama lacks common sense when it comes to the National Deficit he is running up (kind of like a drunk going to the bar and running up a tab).  I mean seriously.  Where is our country going to get all the money to do everything this man is signing into law?  He seems to have no brain.  In fact I don’t think there are many people over there in our nations capital that do have a brain.  Think about it.  These guys (and gals) are in such a panic mode thanks the current state of the economy, that they are passing stuff left and right (pardon the pun).

Well America I believe its time to stand up for what is right unless you want to become the heaviest taxed country in the world (wait a moment – Is that not what our founding fathers won our independence for?  Due to high taxes?).  We MUST vote all of these idiots out of office as soon as possible and put some people in office who are not so brain damaged who might actually undo and unravel the mess that Mr. Obama and Congress has put us in.

I pray that this country survives and becomes prosperous once again.

Lets do the right thing America and make our votes count!
